I’m Kristen McGowan, proud owner of MCPA – McGowan Chartered Professional Accountant.

I look forward to sharing my story. I hope that you will enjoy getting to know me better.

I entered public practice and began articling in Lloydminster. I achieved my CPA, and after a few years, I chose to work with a public practice firm to understand what a career in accounting could be like. I chose to work for a local municipality for a period of time as their CFO so I could apply my business knowledge to day to day operations.

I enjoyed my time working for a local county and applying business consulting skills but then really missed doing the daily work with several clients. After a few months, I realized that I increasingly missed working in public practice and was meant for it, so I decided to jump back into it.

I started my own firm so that my values and client service standards could be offered to the public with a level of excellence that I believe in. I felt owning a business allowed me to enjoy an optimal work-life balance while providing accounting services and business consulting on my own service level standards. I am motivated by my drive to help my clients and offer a service that goes beyond accounting services.

I have been in this industry for ten years while being designated for six of those years, and my firm has been in business for close to three years now. I also co-own an environmental drilling company with my husband, and that venture has been around for five years.

Evaluating my business over the last couple of years, I have seen a notable amount of growth, while still offering the highest regarded service. My client base and enterprises are diversifying more than ever before. To keep up with the changes, we focus on consistently researching efficiencies for files and implementing various technologies. Our research aids us in passing on those efficiencies to our clients.

What I love most about my job is helping clients reach their goals and interpret tax legislation and business planning to excel their companies. I enjoy showing them the benefits of going beyond the numbers and watching their financial statements tell a story. These findings can also be used to improve their operations. The most rewarding part of owning a business is that at the end of the day: all successes and failures are a direct response to my management, control, and direction.

I believe what sets me apart from the others is my reliability, honesty, efficiency, innovation, and general attitude of giving back to the community. I also believe that if we help people get what they want, we can get what we want.

I attribute my success to a high-quality service offering coupled with strong business relationships with clients. These helped me grow as a dependable, reliable and trusted business advisor. Putting my own name up on the wall drives me each and every day to live up to that reputation. It has even given me great pride and immense satisfaction.

When I am not at work, I have a vast network of family and friends whom I love spending time with. My primary interests and hobbies include playing on the Greenstreet women’s rec hockey team and orthodox ball team. I love fishing with my kids and spending time on the water. My biggest dream and life goal is to travel the globe while being philanthropic in my travels.

I spent some time in Ghana after I completed my University degree and feel strongly about helping the street children there. I am also passionate about advancing women in business and empowering woman to chase their dreams. I also have a special interest in politics and being a part of the change I feel is needed in Canada.

I have enjoyed sharing my story about the things which matter to me and how they influence the way I do business.
